Exploring American Education: Insights from a Middle School Observation in Arizona 1 – Page Middle School

This summer, I traveled to Page, Arizona, in the USA as part of a university program. During my stay, I had the incredible opportunity to observe the American educational system firsthand. I met a math teacher who kindly arranged for me to visit her school, providing me with a valuable glimpse into their teaching methods and facilities.

The school, catering to 600 students, was impressively equipped with a variety of facilities, including a gymnasium, a spacious cafeteria, music rooms, a well-stocked library with numerous computers and diverse books, and an infirmary. One of the most striking aspects of the school was that each teacher had their own classroom, allowing them to personalize the space to their teaching style and needs. This system also meant that students moved between classes according to their schedules, which I found to be highly beneficial for both students and teachers.

In the classrooms, teachers utilized a computer program called PowerTeacher to take attendance and communicate with school officials online. Furthermore, to encourage attendance, teachers distributed tickets to students as a thank you for coming to class. These tickets were part of a weekly reward system that recognized students’ efforts. Additionally, classrooms were equipped with computers for student use, fostering an interactive and engaging learning environment.

Teachers received 55 minutes of preparation time daily and underwent monthly observations by school officials as part of a government policy. Feedback was provided after these observations, supporting teachers’ professional development. Another commendable aspect of the school was the meal pricing policy in the cafeteria. Students from families with an income under $1,500 could receive meals for free, ensuring that all students had access to nutritious food.

My experience at this public school was eye-opening, revealing a level of quality and dedication that surpassed many private schools in Turkey. This visit was not only enlightening but also deeply inspiring, showcasing the strengths of the American educational system.
